Columbia council approves chickens in city

Feb 2, 2010, 9:03 AM

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – The Columbia City Council has decided to allow residents to raise chickens within city limits.

The Columbia Tribune reports that on Monday night, the council voted 4-3 to allow the chickens in residential backyards.

Supporters say the benefits of raising their own chickens range from better health to educational experiences for children.

The opponents, mostly realtors, said the chickens would diminish property values.

The ordinance allows as many six hens – but no roosters – to be kept in enclosed pens in the backyards of residential neighborhoods. The chickens can be used only for noncommercial purposes.
